Danger of Eating Too Much Instant Noodles & Correct Way to Cook Them

without comments

Over the past years, I have received some forwarded emails from friends about the dangers of instant noodles. Some people may not be aware of the dangers and just to save money or due to no time to cook, they may be slowly poisoning their systems. There is no harm to take precautions. Many kids love to eat instant noodles- so if you are cooking occassionally for your kids, you may want to take note of the correct way to cook instant noodles.

The content below are based on forwarded emails that I’ve received- I am not the original author:

Canned/Bottled Juices- Are They Good for You?

without comments

Many folks will take a glass of Orange Juice for breakfast. The juice normally comes in a cartoon in various brand names. Are those really good for you?

Question: How can a cartoon of alleged “pure orange juice” is cheaper and provide more volume that if you were to squeeze the real fruit?

Most of the fruit juices sold in bottles or cartoons are nothing more than flavoured sugar water, and we are not even talking about fructose (sugar in the fruit form). Years ago, taken by the advertising on packaged fruit juice, I drank lots of it only to find myself gaining weight- for nothing due to empty calories.

The best way to have your fruit is in its natural form. If you are too lazy to bite and chew, then go ahead and blend the fruit but drink both the juice and the fibre together. Else, if you want the real thing, you can order from the hawker stall where they blend the real juice together- tell the person no sugar (so that the sacharin or whathever artificial sugar concuction is not added). Months ago, I remember I had once resisted the tempation to order milk tea and ended ordering carrot juice (from the food court). After that, I felt more energy and not so sluggish.

Dangers of Processed Meat

without comments

City folks mostly led busy lives- work late and by the time we get home, we just pop in convenient meals. Who has the time to go to the market to buy chicken meat, marinate and cook for meals? Most of the time, we resort to either eating out or just having a quick-fix meal.

For those of us who are into exercising and into toning/muscle building, we may resort to taking less carbohydrates and more protein. If we are constantly on the go, having demanding careers, trying to find time to balance the rest of the time between family, exercising and social life, we would just have time for processed food.

In The Star paper last Sunday, an excellent article was written by Dr Amir that talks about the dangers of processed meat. To quote a part of the article on processed meat by Dr Amir:
Avoid processed meats
Meats (fish, chicken, beef, mutton, etc) are also heavily contaminated and should be ozonised the same way.
A report by the World Cancer Research Fund, entitled Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective (2007), revealed that processed meats definitely cause cancer. They reviewed 7000 studies on diet and cancer.
Processed meats are meat products that have chemical additives to alter their taste and preserve their shelf-lives so that they become marketable. These include bacon, hotdog, sausage, pepperoni, deli slices, canned meats, and many more. The harmful chemical additives are blamed for increasing cancer risk.
Burnt, barbecued meat also has high levels of carcinogens. So when you eat satay or BBQ, avoid the burnt parts. Better still, eat sushi, like the Japanese!”

How Processed Foods Affect Us

without comments

Normally, I don’t watch the show Downsize Me- I prefer the show ‘How to Live Longer’ which was previously shown on Discovery DH&H. But today, the show “Downsize Me” caught my eye.

The participate in the show was someone who is addicted to sugary treats and fat foods. She does lots of binge eating- eating non stop to the extend, she had to hide her eating because she was ashamed of her eating habits. She also kept a secret stash of food in the house that she will sneak off to eat when no one’s watching. She also ate every hour- a soda with croissant now, and candies bars in the next. Her daily sugar intake was a whopping 23 times the recommended daily intake (the recommended amount includes sugar from fruits as well). She weights 104.9kg with 58% body fat, way on her way to heart disease and diabetes. Read the rest of this entry »
