So you have sinned in a big meal, what to do next?
During the last few weeks, I’ve been invited to many lunches by friends and colleagues. My friends paid for my lunch from their hearts as their gesture of thanks, and it will not be appropriate to complain about the calories, rite?
If you think you have been ‘bad’, then check out some of the food that I’ve been eating:
Above: My absolute favorite- marmide chicken. Next to it is tauhu (fried in Thai style). There’s also mutton (that I don’t eat) and some veges stir fried with belacan.
What I’ve Done by Linkin Park- valuable message
Previously, I’ve never been a fan of Linkin Park. However, their song, “What I’ve Done” changed my entire perspective of the group. These are the guys who wrote a song with many thought provoking messages. I think the group would have earn a much bigger fan base that were previously not from their targeted audience, and at the same time, imparting a good message across to their existing fan base - just with that song alone.
The video clip, with a series of pictures, tells a story that a thousand words may not effectively express, but I would like to cover on the portion of food:
All we could think about is food, food, food. In the morning, we think about what we want to eat for lunch, after lunch, we wondered what to have for tea, then for dinner. Sometimes, if we are going out with friends, we are already planning our dinner in our minds.

Food Choices That You Can Make
When you eat out, there are often many mouth watering dishes that you can feast on, generally involving fast food or anything that is sweet and high in fat. Things that come to mind- lasagna, spagetti with mushroom sauce, curry mee, nasi lemak, Indian rice (with the complete side dishes and spices), etc. And to top it off with ice lemon tea, ice blended with cheese cake or chocolate mud cake as desserts.
For many sedentary people, eating this type of food would start triggering food cravings. If you have a set lunch consisting of this type of food combination, you will find that you may want to search for something to nibble in the afternoon or get hungry again in the evening. When the craving arises, sometimes it is hard to resist and if you were to succumb, you will almost end up feeling bad or rotten about yourself. Or you will feel so tired and bloated after that full lunch that you may end up getting yourself a Hazelnut latte (Hazelnut latte is really very high in sugar).
The cause lies in your lunch selection and what you choose to eat may influence how you feel for the rest of the day.
Dealing with aftermath of Christmas feasts
Year end is fast approaching. For most people, the holidays will mean gathering, reunions, holidays, happy times and of course— gloriously delicious food will always be part of the menu.
How did you fare during XMas dinners/feasts?
1. Being very careful with food- and do not take or just take an itsy tiny weeny food in the ‘forbidden list’.
2. Take everything- but high calories food in moderation and control. Load up on fibre such as vegetables and fruits first.
3. Completely throw caution in the wind- it’s the time of the year to eat, eat and eat more.
You’re very disciplined. But if you are on the type of diets that restricts carbs, fat, sugar, etc, it’s quite a challenge. You come out of it feeling glad that you will not gain the seasonal 5 pounds. It’s great for those of us who have learnt to genuinely enjoy the company of others without associating the happy times with food. But if we get through because we force ourselves not to eat it but still think about our favourite foods most of the time, it’s only a matter of time before we finally break our resolve.
Year end is here–more celebrations and FOOD!
Both November and December have been quite a challenge. There are dinners and opportunity to catch up with friends & enjoy food on literally every weekend. At Malaysian dinners where all types of mouth watering cuisine from Malay, Chinese, Indian and Western are all lined up for the taking- it’s really hard to resist.
“Eat now, regret later” used to be my old motto. It’s now replaced by “eat now, exercise later.”
I no longer take huge portions like I do last time- but still, I will have tendency to indulge slightly more in the sweet stuff- that’s where the hidden calories come in- unlike eating some fried rice or steak where you can feel the ‘fullness’ and know you’ve consumed enough- it’s easy to overlook the calorie intake in sweet stuff.
I’ll probably try to figure out how to manage this year end ‘bulge’ later…. well at least…. after my dinner party tonite.
My Cheat Day
I would say that my cheat day is normally Wednesday. This is because every Wednesday, our cleaning lady will make a few jugs of milk tea and coffee. She’s good at making the drinks. Needless to say, I’m always the first to arrive with my cups- I will take about a cup of coffee and tea each. And it’s nice to accompany it with some light cakes. And sometimes, I refill them. Yum yum, totally awesome….
How do I compensate for the “cheating”?
Usually, I make sure I have a good workout either on the night or the day after. It helps:
- to prevent fatigue coming in on subsequent days due to overeating of sugar.
- it also prevents the onset of sugar addiction and cravings on subsequent days
- to burn the calories accumulated and prevents it from depositing onto the tummy.
I also take very light food- maybe a glass of Ensure (for nutrition) or just some fruits after my workout. I love the coffee and tea served on Wednesday and am not prepared to give it up. When it comes to any form of eating, it’s important to have some kind of trade off. Since I do enjoy exercising, it just gives me more reasons why I should be getting to the gym.
