I would say that my cheat day is normally Wednesday. This is because every Wednesday, our cleaning lady will make a few jugs of milk tea and coffee. She’s good at making the drinks. Needless to say, I’m always the first to arrive with my cups- I will take about a cup of coffee and tea each. And it’s nice to accompany it with some light cakes. And sometimes, I refill them. Yum yum, totally awesome….

How do I compensate for the “cheating”?

Usually, I make sure I have a good workout either on the night or the day after. It helps:

  • to prevent fatigue coming in on subsequent days due to overeating of sugar.
  • it also prevents the onset of sugar addiction and cravings on subsequent days
  • to burn the calories accumulated and prevents it from depositing onto the tummy.

I also take very light food- maybe a glass of Ensure (for nutrition) or just some fruits after my workout. I love the coffee and tea served on Wednesday and am not prepared to give it up. When it comes to any form of eating, it’s important to have some kind of trade off. Since I do enjoy exercising, it just gives me more reasons why I should be getting to the gym.

How often do you weight yourself to check against weight loss/gain?

Do the reading at the scales felt like judgement day? If your weight had gone down, that means you have been ‘good’. But if there is no change or worse, the pounds had gone up, it means you’ve been a failure….

There is a article Six Principles To Burn Off Belly Fat from Fitness Village (update: the last I checked, the site has been removed) that mentioned that mentioned the following:
“Set Goals. If you need to lose fifty lbs don’t make that your goal. Take the weight you want to lose and multiply that by 12%. That is your first goal. So your first goal is 6 lbs. If this is your first time back with working out then you probably will make that in the first week. Just because the majority of it will be water weight. But let me say this about setting weight goals. Sooner or later you will be disappointed. Because I have come to realize that scales are from hell. They are evil and will derail you from any workout program. I stayed at the same weight for 3 months…matter of fact went up in weight. But I was wearing smaller and smaller pants and shirts. So better goals would be run a half mile, fit into 36 pants, drop two dress sizes, get rid of the cottage cheese on your butt, or get your man boobs to a place that they don’t need a bra.”

Scales may not give you the real picture. The scale may show that you’ve lost 5kg after going on a yo-yo diet, but you may have actually lost water- which your body will be struggling to put back the moment the chance arises.

On the other hand, you may have worked very hard, exercising and practising good eating habits but the weight don’t seems to drop much. You may have gotten very discouraged- but before you give up, take note that:

  • it may be more accurate to determine your weight loss by how well your clothes are fitting you. Are your once-very-tight pants now on the verge of dropping down if you do not put a belt on? Your clothing seemed to be loose and you look better in clothes.
  • you feel you’ve got more energy
  • friends who have not seen you for a while commented that you’ve seemed to lose weight?
  • and muscles do weight more than fat. The muscles that you’ve built from exercising had displaced your fat- heavier but firmer and much lesser in volume.

However, I still wish to elaborate further on the last point- muscle weighing heavier than fat- the fact that we need to ensure we are being honest with ourselves. Sometimes we may actually gained weight after exercising because we’ve cut ourselves too much slack when it comes to exercising. We go easy on the exercise but hard on the food afterwards (have a good supper with our pals after a workout session). If we were to do that, we do really gain weight. But if we exercise consistently, watch our diet (cut down sugar, rice and starch), we are on our way to weight loss.

Update: The last I checked, Fitness Village was removed by Wordpress.

Today is Wednesday night. So far, have been quite consistent, except today I can’t resist and took a ghee ball.

Morning before reaching office:

  • 1 packet of 3-in-1 Nescafe Breakfast
  • 2 slices of Gardenia Breakthru bread with egg sandwich (with butter)
  • ate a bit of fruits like rambutans, papayas (few small cubes of it only)

At office

a packet of 80ml Hi-Low Chocolate flavoured milk

Lunch:

  • Salad with some vegetarian side wishes. There was a some dressing- I could not stop the guy in time not to put the dressing.
  • another egg sandwich on 2 slices of Gardenia Breakthru bread with egg (and a piece of cheese in between)
  • 1/2 packet of Nescafe Breakfast 3-in-1

Throughout the day, I ate my tupperware of fruits consists of mixture of pamelo, papaya and red apples (it’s those 3 compartment tupperware, so it’s quite big). In the evening, took a ghee ball.

Dinner:

  • A slice of baked pumpkin with a little smeared butter on the top- you should try it- even though I dislike pumpkin, I find it nice.
  • 2 small slices of chicken- marinated with sugar, salt and sweet plum sauce- fried, then put in the oven to drain out the oil.

Went to gym also- did cardio 20 min, followed by 50 times crunches on Swiss ball, then another 15 min cardio and stretching properly.

Food I take is less than what I normally take, but I lacked the cravings for sweet stuff. And the best part, I don’t feel tired or drained out.

It’s not entirely your fault if you are overweight and have problem keeping it off.
Eating the wrong type of food will trigger your cravings and hunger pangs. And most of the time, you do not realise it.

Once, there was a woman who was was overweight all her life. When she was 40years old, she weighed 300 pounds. She had seen doctors and they had never attempted to understand why she was overweight. Instead, they blame her weak willpower and greediness for food as the cause of her obesity. I cannot believe that a doctor actually said this to her (quoted from her book):
You are fat for one reason and one reason only,” he continued. “You eat like a pig. You look like a pig because you eat like a pig and you will continue to look like a pig until you stop eating like a pig. Your blood pressure is at stroke level. Your triglycerides are twice normal. Your knees are collapsing from the burden of carrying all of that weight around. If you look like this at forty, can you imagine what you’ll look like in twenty years?

Today, I read a very motivational real life story in the Runner’s World (Nov07) magazine. It’s about a news anchorwoman from Orlando by the name of Wendy Chioji. Wendy initially felt a lump on her left breast 2 weeks before she was about to compete for the 2001 Boston Marathon. A year ago, she just had a mammogram done and the results were normal. So she decided to compete for the marathon and come back later for tests.

When she went back for the test, she found out that she’d had breast cancer stage 2. She started an online diary to keep viewers informed of her recovery. She undergone treatments and went for chemo but with determination, she work on most days and only miss a few days of work. She felt that had motivated others like her to believe that life can be normal.

At first, the chemo treatment had weakened her body considerably. She was used to spending 18 hours a week on running, biking and swimming. During the course of chemo treatment, she could barely muster 20 min. But she persisted do exercise even a bit, like running or walking around the block.

The drugs and chemo had killed her appetite and made her unable to sleep a night. Running made her hungry and she was able to eat better. That helped her to recover.

Now, she is 45 and had been declared cancer free. She was one of the 20 athletes who were selected from 1000 applications to ride cross country with Lance Amstrong in order to raise funds for cancer research.

Months ago I went on the no starch and no sugar intake. Well, there’s only an exception that I’ve made which is in the 3-in-1 coffee that I must have everyday. Else, during that time, all my food literally had no processed sugar, white flour, rice, glutton or starch. This is because those stuff are known to trigger food cravings and hunger pangs, leading to tiredness and mood swings. Surprisingly, it works and I do not feel so tired or hungry even though I was eating less- I realised picking the right type of food does make a difference.

Then when I went travelling, I reintroduced sugar and starch back to my eating plan. I don’t gain weight but I don’t lose any either. Things were ok for a while till I noticed that within these two weeks, I am developing food cravings again- wanting to eat either something sweet or salty even though I am not really hungry. I can still put up with that but one thing I cannot tolerate is increased feelings of fatigue and tiredness. Previous experience had convinced me that it was due to taking starch and sugar.

Continuation from Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5….

Yesterday, I feasted myself with good food- went for a Chinese 10 course dinner, and earlier the day, my friend brought me a delicious nasi lemak breakfast followed by a good lunch. In the 10 course dinner, the last course is the dessert- and it’s always one of my favourite. Helped myself to lots of sweet fried stuff. It was a happy occasion and I don’t regret indulging myself and having good times with old friends.

This morning, woke up feeling just a bit tired with a bit of pain here and there. That generally happens when I overdose in food and sweet stuff. Normally that goes off after a work out when I drink lots of water in between workout. Exercise increases circulation. I remembered at the height of my plan, I went for a Chinese 10 course dinner and eat only a little. Woke up feeling ok. But now, I take life much more easier.

I have my recovery plan in place:
